Conference of preparation of the World Conference of the Humanities.

The South American Conference will take place in Belo Horizonte, Brazil,

from the 4th to the 7th October, 2016, at the Federal University of Minas

Gerais (UFMG).

South American colleagues, in the various Unions and institutions.

日本学術会議は若手科学者の育成のため、「若手科学者ネットワーク」

を立ち上げ、参加希望者を募っております。地理学関連コミュニティの

若手研究者や学生さんたちにも是非多数参加していただきたく存じます。

日本学術会議関係者各位

このたび、日本国内の多様な分野で活躍する若手研究者をつなぐべく、日本学

術会議若手アカデミー若手科学者ネットワークを設立することとなりました。

若手同士で活発な意見交換をさせていただき、「未来に責任のある世代」とし

て建設的な議論ができる場としていきたいと思っています。

その立ち上げのために、現在、各学協会の「若手の会」にも参加を呼びかけて

いるところです。

しかし、現状では、若手の会の存在自体も完全には把握できているとは言えま

せん。

もし皆様の把握されている若手の組織がありましたら、若手科学者ネットワー

クの存在を周知していただき、参加を促していただければと思います。

若手科学者ネットワークの主な活動内容は、

1)メーリングリストを通じての情報交換と政策提言に関わる意見集約、

2)ワークショップ「日本学術会議若手アカデミー若手科学者サミット」の開催

3)若手の会の活動内容を集約したアニュアルレポートの作成

などを想定しております。

若手科学者ネットワークへの参加は、メーリングリストへの登録によって可能

になります。

IYGUに関する情報

IYGU Newsletterは先月お送りしたものと同じですが、Glastonbury Festival
と呼ばれる大きなフェスティバルでIYGU が取り上げられています！

Dear all,

The cooperation with the music and performing arts Glastonbury Festival is
on the way to get implemented. With an attendance of more that
150.000-170.000 persons (one of the biggest open air festival world wide),
the participation of the globally best known artist of contemporary popular
music (Coldplay, Adele, Beck etc. etc. see: http://www.glastonburyfestivals.
co.uk/line-up/), hosting also dance, comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret etc.,
the presence of the world (music) press this is really a big step to bring
the IYGU movement and network into the global music and youth scene, and to
make many important persons from the political arena aware of it. The
cooperation will include most of all the presence in the Green Futures arena
of the festival
(http://www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/areas/the-green-fields/green-futures/
). Here IYGU is already in the spotlight:

2016 is also the International Year of Global Understanding. The Green
Fields is the perfect arena for highlighting this as we continue to promote
and elevate awareness of how the local impacts the global. You will find
many practical examples of how we as individuals can make a difference to
the whole.'

In addition we just signed the memorandum of understanding for a global
action center for the arts with the Laboratoire MEMOIRE DE L'AVENIR in
Paris under the direction of Margalit Berriet. The global call for
participation for the engagement of arts in the IYGU and global
sustainability is attached*.

Dynamics of Economic Spaces Commission Meeting

Palmerston North, New Zealand




FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS




Theme:  New Resource Geographies

Timing:  22-24 November 2016

Venue:  Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand




The last commission meeting to be held in New Zealand was in Auckland in 2006 prior to the IGU Regional Conference in Brisbane.  For a number of reasons it is timely for the Commission to hold a further New Zealand meeting. Some observers have commented that ‘there are now two New Zealands – Auckland and the rest’. This meeting by being based in the provincial city of Palmerston North, home of Massey University, originally established as an agricultural college, thus lends itself especially well to the conference theme of ‘New Resource Geographies’.  New Zealand is many respects still an export specialized economy and in mid 2016 the dairy boom that has sustained the export sector for some years has faltered rather severely.  




The commission meeting is thus likely to coincide with some serious national policy discussion around the future trajectory of the dairy industry (milk power – a late 19^thcentury product - or more value added), the long called for and fraught rationalisation of meat industry processing, and the future place of an array of non-traditional primary exports (e.g. Manuka honey) along with the risk of a new dependency on the Chinese market.  All of this takes place in a context where New Zealand is one of the longer running neo-liberal experiments dating back to the mid-1980s.  




The meeting will also provide the opportunity for a debriefing on the Biological Economies project, an externally funded venture that has probed new sources of rural value and experimentation in New Zealand (see special issue of the New Zealand Geographer vol. 69 (3) 2013), an introduction to the ‘More Markets project and a foreshadowing of the ‘Blue Economy’ part of the Sustainable Seas Challenge part of the national sciences challenge. This latter element will springboard quite usefully to the Commission’s Coastal Transitions meeting in New Haven CT in 2017.




Potential fieldtrips associated with the meeting would include a visit to Hawkes Bay a horticultural and viticultural region and more locally, the opportunity to visit Fonterra and the FoodHQ  hub based at and adjacent to the university campus.




Presentations on food and fibre, farming, fisheries, viticulture, and forestry are particularly welcomed as will other research work that positions food and fibre in a globalisation and or governance framework.  Papers that in other ways contribute to the commission’s research trajectory are also most welcome.

　この度の「平成28年熊本地震」で犠牲となられた方々に謹んで哀悼の意を表
しますとともに、被災者の皆様に、心よりお見舞い申し上げます。

さて、日本学術会議の課題別委員会である「東日本大震災に係る学術調査検討
委員会」では、ミッションの趣旨に基づき1年間の検討を重ね、「東日本大震災
に関する学術調査・研究活動に関するアンケート」を実施することといたしまし
た。

このアンケートは、2011年3月11日に発生した東日本大震災および東京電力
福島第一原子力発電所事故に関して全国の研究者・研究グループが行った学術
調査・研究活動の全体像を把握するとともに、大災害に関する学術調査・研究
活動のあり方や、政府・自治体等が取るべき対策、日本学術会議や学協会・研
究者の連携のあり方等についての示唆・教訓を得ることを目的としています。

Newsletter 2/2016

* 2016 Nairobi Conference on Earth System Governance

The 2016 Conference on Earth System Governance will address the overarching theme of ‘Confronting Complexity and Inequality’. This conference ? the seventh in our conference series ? will take place in Nairobi, 7-9 December 2016.

Through the double-blind review process by our international review panel, 175 papers from 41 countries have been accepted for presentation at the conference.

The conference will be held at the University of Nairobi’s College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences on the Upper Kabete Campus. The local host of the conference is the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies and the conference co-hosting institutions are: 

-        Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht University 

-        Graduate School of Media and Governance at Keio University

* Critical Dialogue on Earth System Governance

Do we need stronger global institutions? Or more global deliberation and democracy? Or possibly both? Such questions, central to many activities in the Earth System Governance community, stood recently at the centre of a “Critical Dialogue” by John S. Dryzek and Frank Biermann in the APSA journal Perspectives on Politics. Read more here.

* Copernicus Institute at Utrecht University has joined Global Alliance of Earth System Governance Research Centres

The Earth System Governance Project is delighted to announce that the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development has joined the Global Alliance of Earth System Governance Research Centres. This Alliance is a world-wide network of major research hubs that support the implementation of the Earth System Governance Science Plan and act as focal points in their regions and their areas of research. * Sikina Jinnah receives ISA Sprout Award

This year’s Harold and Margaret Sprout Award of the International Studies Association (ISA) for the best book in international environmental affairs is awarded to our Research Fellow Sikina Jinnah, American University's School of International Service, for her book Post-treaty Politics: Secretariat Influence in Global Environmental Governance. The book has been published in the Earth System Governance series of The MIT Press in 2014. Read more here.
