Dear Colleagues,From 23 to 26 September 2015 the International Scientific-practical Forum “Protected Karst territories ? Education and Training” will be held in Sofia, Bulgaria.It is organized by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography ? BAS.Information about the forum is attached to the Second Circular Letter. Please distribute it among other of your colleagues, who might be interested in the Forum themes.I would like to draw your attention on the fact, that a central part of this forum will be the Bulgarian initiative of declaring the International Year of Karst and Caves.It was proposed in 2012 and was reported at the 16th International Conference of Speleology in Brno, the Czech Republic (2013) and at the Regional Conference in IGU in Kyoto, Japan (2013),as well as other scientific international events. At this Forum it will be suggested that this initiative is specifically discussed and a joint resolution prepared.For this purpose, the Forum website opens a column “Forum initiatives”, where proposals and preliminary views can be submitted.Soon other initiatives and ideas supporting the initiative of declaring the International Year of Karst and Caves will be announced.Karst is primarily a “geographical object” and we expect the International Geographical Union and its national committees and members to actively participate in this initiative.Through the International Year of Karst and Caves as Geographers we will get the opportunity to focus the attention of the World community andmanagers on current issues related to the use and protection of karst territories; we will be able to offer professional judgments and expertise for their sustainable development.With my best regards:Petar Stefanov
