Leveraging science for the future of Small Island Developing States

At SIDS4, the ISC Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Liaison Committee issued a declaration emphasizing the need for increased support for science to bolster the resilience and sustainable development of the environmentally and economically vulnerable SIDS.

🏝️ With the support of the ISC's Regional Focal Points, the ISC SIDS Liaison Committee actively prepared for the SIDS4 conference, aiming to spotlight the research of the SIDS scientific community to global policymakers.

💡 During the conference, the Committee issued a declaration underscoring the urgent need for increased scientific support to enhance the resilience and sustainable development of the environmentally and economically vulnerable SIDS.

➡️ Small Island Developing States face unique challenges due to their distinct geographical, ecological, and socio-economic characteristics. Despite these hurdles, SIDS demonstrate extraordinary resilience, leading the way in sustainable development and pioneering efforts in adaptation and resilience amidst existential risks.

ISC Statement on the occasion of the United Nations International Day of Living Together in Peace

The International Science Council, the global voice for science, is deeply troubled with the ongoing destruction of lives, livelihoods, and environments, particularly in Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine.

The destruction of essential infrastructure for learning—schools, colleges, and universities—and the devastating loss of life is profoundly disturbing.

Teachers, scholars, and researchers are critical to building knowledge societies that create the conditions for peace and understanding, fostering intellectual growth and mutual respect. The impacts of such devastation extend far beyond random destruction; educational, scientific, and cultural sites and resources are often deliberately targeted during times of conflict, aiming to fracture the very foundations of enlightenment and progress.
