Every four years the International Geographical Union (IGU) organizes international congresses for electing its executive committee and heads of commissions. The annual regional
conferences are key events in the period between congresses. They are held in different regions of the world and usually gather up to 1500 participants from many countries.
The IGU is the oldest international scientific organization, which will soon celebrate its centenary. It incorporates geographical communities of 90 countries.
Russian Geographical Society brings together experts in the field of geography and related sciences as well as enthusiastic travelers, environmentalists, social activists, and all who are
willing to participate in the study and conservation of natural resources of Russia, to promote the development and popularization of geography. Since 2009, the Russian Defense Minister
Sergey Shoygu is the President of the Society.
More than 100 thematic sessions and workshops will be held in the framework of the scientific program of IGU 2015 conference.
The main topics include the following:
- environmental situation in urban areas;
- polar research;
- climate change;
- cross-border conflicts;
- sustainable development of the regions.
The conference will also hold sections on the following topics:
- geographic information systems and distributed spatial data;
- natural and man-made disasters and risks;
- modeling of the geographic systems;
- higher and secondary geographic education;
- the impact of the Olympic Games and other investment mega-projects on the environment;
- modern geographic technologies;
- dynamics of economic areas;
- problems of sustainable land and water management etc.

The programme of the conference is extremely varied. It includes: scientific sessions, the exhibition of specialized literature, maps, atlases and developments in geoinformatics, special
events for students and early-career scholars, keynote speakers’ lectures.
